Claim: A plane with 50 passengers caught fire at Shahjalal International Airport.
Fact: It was actually a mock exercise or training session on how to handle such situations.

A claim has recently gone viral on social media that a plane with 50 passengers caught fire while landing at Shahjalal International Airport. See the posts here and here. The video shows a fire incident on a plane. See screenshots of the videos here.

Our investigation has shown that this claim is false.

Fact check/Verification

By verifying the claim using a Google keyword search, it is found that the claim of a fire on an aeroplane with 50 passengers while landing at Shahjalal International Airport is false.

A mock exercise of a fire incident on an aeroplane with 50 dummy passengers was held at Shahjalal International Airport on June 2, 2024 (Sunday). See the reports here: Amader Samay, Dhaka Mail, Bangla Tribune

The reports indicate that such exercises are organized every two years according to the regulations of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) to train the concerned personnel.

After the exercise, Air Vice Marshal Mafidur Rahman, Chairman of the Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh (CAAB), said: “ICAO’s audit will be held in Bangladesh this year. They will see how we carry out these activities in the audit.”

He also said that such exercises will pave the way for self-evaluation and development.

Conclusion

Therefore, the viral posts claiming a fire incident on an aeroplane with 50 passengers at the airport are false.
